What are you going to say… what are you going to ask… how many cards are you going to collect… how are you going to get away from the ANNOYING person whilst time ticks… what are you going to send them afterwards… what is your OFFER… etc.

The people that speak the most buy the most… therefore the trick to networking is simple. Get them talking about themselves and always collect their information so you can keep in touch.

Some great questions I have used with MASSIVE results at Networking events:

1) How did you get your start in the ‘widget’ business? (Make them the movie of the week… be sure to actively listen)

2) What do you enjoy most about your Profession? (Elicits a positive response and importantly makes people feel good about what they do)

3) What separates you and your company from the competition? (Give them permission to BRAG)

4) What advice would you give someone just starting out in the ‘widget business’? (Makes them feel superior and allows them to do some mentoring)

5) What one thing would you do in your business… if you knew you couldn’t fail? (Get them ‘go deeper’ into what they do. Money is made from this question)

6) What significant changes have you seen take place in your profession through the years? (The good old days… this also stimulates thoughts where opportunities lie in their industry. Translation – MONEY!)

7) What do you see as the coming trends in your industry? (Speculation question and positions them as the EXPERT in their industry, makes them feel important)

8) What has been the strangest/funniest incident you have seen in your business? (People love to trade ‘War Stories’)

9) What ways have you found to be most effective for promoting your business? (Elicits a positive response and also helps you ‘read’ how they think)

10) What do you see as the most difficult thing about dealing in your industry? (Ask this from a customers stand point and from the industry. Pain in your industry equals OPPORTUNITY and therefore lots of MONEY)

11) What one sentence would you like people to use in describing the way you do business? (You are allowing them to give themselves a compliment, who doesn’t like compliments!)

You’ll notice something common about my questions… they are all about THEM. Notwithstanding it allows your prospect to talk about themselves as well as brainstorm their own industry (which they seldom do… trust me. And quite possibly will be a very PROFITABLE conversation for them). Don’t expect to get a chance to ask all of these questions to one person but be armed with them for the right situation. Let your personality dictate which ones you use.
